War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Miles L. Smith Co. K, 10th Conn. Vols., on patriotic stationery, "New Bern, N. C., May 2, 1862", in part: "…[in] the whole city of New Bern there is 4 churches…it seems quite natural to go inside of a church to meeting. The soldiers all go to church here with their guns and bayonets and cartridges box with them and the band to[o]. It don't seem mutch like going to church…when the church is out we all have to march back to the camp. It seems more like the forth of July…than to going to meeting …we have taken Fort Macon…[in] Beaufort and I saw one of the rebels that was down there in the fort a fighting and now he is…home here in New Bern…he said…he had bin in that fort ever since last July and…that there was no use for the Southerners to fight with the North for they take every place where they go…Amos [B. Smith]…has shot his thumb off. He was out in the woods with a squad of men cutting trees and he had his gun with him and he was getting over a fence and the gun went off…I have not seen him since. I believe he is coming home…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
