Sunday 5 of us went up to the creek where the rebels burnt the railroad bridge. We saw 12 rebels…above the creek [on] the other side of the bridge…some of our cavalry went after them…we have built the bridge up again and the long bridge across the Nuse river where the rebels burnt when they left New Bern…so that the engine goes across it. When our men went out on a skirmish they captured 2 engines and we have got them…in New Bern and we have built 2 forts, one with 18 guns and the other with 8 and built a car that has 2 guns in it and port holes all along on the sides. The outside is covered with iron so that the balls will not go through it, is called the land monitor, named after the Monitor that sunk the Merrymack…if we take Richmond it will soon be ended…I should like to be there to help Father…tell Father that Katie…is coming out to Milford to be his boy for she…has got her hair cut off just like a boy's…".
