War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Miles L. Smith Co. K, 10th Conn. Vols., on patriotic stationery, "New Bern, N. C., Sept. 1, 1862", in part: "…we had good news from Richmond, 19 thousand rebels killed and 8 thousand on our side…we are on picket…about 8 miles from New Bern. We have a car so that some of us go down to New Bern everyday. I have charge of 2 of the picket post, the outer post…there is 4 hundred guerrillas about 4 miles above us…one of the rebels deserted and came down to us…he said that it was so and they was a coming down to take us…they will have a good time doing it for there is 2 pieces of cannon and 2 Co's. of the 27th Mass regiment and Co. H and K of the 10 regiment…". VG
