A good pair of war-date Union soldier's letter, totaling 7pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Miles L. Smith Co. K, 10th Conn. Vols., "New Bern, N. C., June 8 & July 13, 1862", in part: "…the biggest lot of pigs and hogs that ever I saw is down here. The woods is full of them. You say the 5th Connecticut is taken prisoners…he said that [Pvt. William] Elliot Plumb [Co. C, 5th Conn.] was wounded in the arm [at the first battle of Winchester, Va., May 25, 62]…they [the rebels] did not take him. You say Amos [see previous letter] is home and his thumb is well and has got a very bad arm. I feel sorry for him if he has got to loose his arm…Corinth is evacuated and Richmond is taken and what a cheering [there was] down here when we heard the news…[July 13, 1862]…I think Amos has not got mutch plunk. The men in his company think so. They say that he aint the man that they took him to be. They think he aint got mutch courage and I think so to. I had rather stay with the company and come home together…for the news is favorable…McClellan captured 3 batteries and 5 thousand prisoners and Burnside is there with him…". Amos Smith was eventually discharged for disability in January 1863. The original stamped transmittal cover for the July 13th letter is included. VG
