Issue of NILE’S WEEKLY REGISTER, September 20, 1817, with obituary for Paul Cuffee and reads “Died, at Westport, Ms. on the 7th inst. Paul Cuffee, a very respectable and well known man of color, as a merchant, sea-captain, and philanthropist. He was a member of the society of Friends, or Quakers, and much esteemed by all classes of people, for his morality, truth and intelligence...” Fine. Paul Cuffee (1759-1817) was a son of a slave, and gained his freedom. He founded the first black school in Westport, Mass. and in 1811 he founded the Friendly Society for the Emigration of Free Negroes from America as a reasonable solution to improving his culture's plight. That same year he sailed the "Traveler" to Sierra Leone to found the Society. In 1816, with 38 passengers, he set sail to Freetown to repatriate his people, but died soon thereafter.
