Autograph Document Signed, "Franklin Anderson" as District Attorney for Frederick County, Maryland, 1p. quarto, March 21, 1818, pertaining to a negro thief. In part: '…The jurors for the state of Maryland…present that Ingatius Dark late of the said Count, free Negro, on the fifteenth day of March in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and eighteen, with force and arms at the County aforesaid one turkey of the price of one dollar of the goods and chattels of one Joseph Talbott then and their being found feloniously did steal take and carry away against the sworn act of assembly in such case made and provided and against the peace, government, and dignity of the state…" With docketing stating that the defendant pleaded "not guilty" and that the witnesses were "Joseph Talbott…Thomas Denmark…Negro Sam…" Unusual to see a negro witness in a case involving a free negro.
