A good war-date Union cavalryman's Gettysburg campaign letter, 4pp. 8vo., written b y Sgt. Efner McNall [died 10/11/63 at Rapidan, Va.], Co. I, 6th New York Cavalry, "four miles from Bladensburg, Md., July 11, 1863", while still in Maryland, eight days after surviving the Battle of Gettysburg, McNall, 6th Regiment New York Volunteer Cavalry, writes home to his family about recent happenings. A few days earlier, his regiment skirmished with some rebels, the "...next day we fought some and fell back." The following day, "...we fought all day...there was no infantry Engaged on our side but the Rebs had a division we fought about 11 hours dismounted with our carbines." In the battle he is wounded, but not seriously, when "a minie ball took a chunk out of my pants and just frayed my leg but did not draw the blood." McNall continues that his regiment, over the course of one month, "...from the 9th of June to the 9th of July...have fought 6 diferent [sic] battles..." and there is word that "...Lee is concentrating his force between Hagerstown and the old Antietem [Antietam] battlefield and Mead[e] is ready to give him battle so we expect a heavy battle today or tomorrow." He adds a short postscript stating that he has "heard that the 154th was cut up very bad at the battle of Gettysburg I have not seen any of them since the fight." A bit light with some stains, else VG.
