C., June 15, 1863", in part: "…there is another expedition a going from hear in a few days…there is near 55 regiments hear in New Bern…I don't have to stand guard now for I have been appointed by the colonel for a corporal to go with the collors for I was with the collors at Kinston [Dec. 14, 1862] and stood by them to the last and he wanted me to go with them all of the time. I don't have to drill only when the collors come out but it aint very pleasant to be with the collors in battle for they shoot at the collors. They was 9 bullets shot through them at Kinston…".
