C, 31st Indiana Vols., "Manchester, Tenn., July 22, 1863", in part: "…our company is detached from the Regt as Provost Guards and we are on guard or some kind of detail all the time…I think our marching is about over in this war…for the rebs are getting whipped all of the time and we are all the time taking prisoners…there are some 2,000 rebs and citizens come here and got paroled or taken the oath of allegiance…they come in here in squads of 40 or 50 at a time and give up…the wealthiest citizens here has hardly enough to live on and the poorer class are worst off than anybody…they are almost naked and they say they have nothing to eat…some says they have not tasted sugar or coffee for 18 months and some have not eat a bite of pork for 12 months…we trade sugar, coffee and salt to them for their articles. They say they had to pay $65.00 a bushel for salt…sending my respects to all friends but not to the Butternuts for they are not friends to me…".
