A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Richard E. Thompson [WIA Port Hudson], Co. B., 24th Conn. Vols., on finely illustrated patriotic stationery, "East Baton Rouge, La., Feb. 26, [1863]", in part: "…you say would shoot a nigger as quick as you would Old Jeff. They are taken better care of here than the soldiers are. The difference is the niger wants some one to take care of him and the soldiers take care of themselves…some Regts fare hard. The 48th Mass. Vols…come here in one of the hardest rain storms…with nothing but shelter tents…the next day they…tore down as good a house as there is in Hammonasset…". The original transmittal cover is included.
