War-date Autograph Letter Signed “Alfred Wynkoop”, 1pp. quarto, September 7, 1863, Lieut. David Jones, Post Quartermaster, and reads “Sir Having been assigned to duty as chief medical officer at Hilton Head I have the honor to make application for Quarter.” with integral leaf note signed by “David Jones” 1st Lieut. 97th Penn. Inft., informing Surgeon Wynkoop that he “Will take possession, until further orders, of Home No. 3 fronting the beach.” Fine condition. Just a month prior to this letter Surgeon Alfred Wynkoop, was found guilty of informing the “William Pollock, a citizen of Virginia known to be friendly to the enemy, and others of the same family, of certain important movements of our troops...” This was noted in the August 29th issue of Harper’s Weekly. He was ordered “To be dismissed from the service of the United States” which President Abraham Lincoln countermanded. He was then reassigned to the Army at Hilton Head.
