A great war-date Union cavalryman's letter, 3 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. John Ingle, Co. B, 6th Indiana Cavalry, "Camp near Marietta, Ga., Aug. 18, 1864", concerning their escape from Stoneman's unsuccessful raid on a Confederate POW camp near Macon, Georgia, in part: "…our regiment have had bad luck again. We went on a raid to Macon Ga. and accomplished our end and then started back when we met Wheeler and he attacked us in the morning and we fought awe day and at night they pushed us so hard that Stoneman surrendered, but our regiment cut outing started to Atlanta when Wheeler run into our camp when we had stoped to rest and killed [?] and takin prisoners one hundred and fifty men and with them Co. Bidle [Bvt. Brig. Gen. James Biddle] and Lt. Co. [Courtland C.] Matson and Major Smith…James Jeffers is captured…I will close by asking you to write soon if you please but I will have to frank my letter until pay day for a coming off that raid I swam the river and spoiled awe of my postage stamp and money…".
