A nice war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Color Corp. Miles L. Smith Co. K, 10th Conn. Vols., "Bermuda Hundred, Va., June 10, 1864", in part: "…we…have bin within 2 miles of Richmond, seen some hard times and hard fighting…we have to go on picket every other night…lots of rebs here, so near that we talk with them. We exchange papers with them. One came up to the post…and talked with me quite a while. He said that they would not fire at us if we didn't at them. I asked him what he thought about the war. He said that he thought it would be over this summer and then he asked me if Butler was hear. I told him he was, says he, we would like to get him…says I, if you will send Jeff Davis and Bury gard over to see us we will send him over…then he said we seam like brothers now and in a few days we may be fighting. He says, if it was as the men say we would end this war before this time…I have bin out sharpshooting…up to the front…4 out of our company. One shot went through my rubber blanket and that is near enough tell…". VG
