A nice war-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Color Corp. Miles L. Smith Co. K, 10th Conn. Vols., "Jones Neck, Va., Aug. 3, 1864", in part: "…we are on picket and then on fatigue [duty] and then after the rebs…all of the time…the last time the rebs came down…we drove them back. They charged on our company 3 times but had to skedaddle…and then we would hallow out come on, come on Johnny. We had 2 wounded in our company, Edgar Beecher [WIA Kinston, N. C., Dec. 14, 62], James Cleveland [discharged for severe right shoulder wound]. The rebs had 7 killed and 9 wounded. [John] Elliot Guess was wounded last week [at battle of Strawberry Plains, Va., July 26] in the shin slightly. He is on duty now…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
