On the March in Alabama A Union soldier's war-date letter written by Private Frank Ashley, Co. H, 64th Ohio Volunteers, 3 ½ pp., 8vo, "Stevenson, Alabama, April 4, 1864," reading, in part: "…we have marched one hundred miles and over…in crossing a small river the boys thought they would rather cross in a little boat than to walk around a mile or so…the wire broke that was fastened across the river when 2 of them jumped out and doing so upset the boat and boys…all got out safe with the loss of 2 guns…will leave tomorrow for Chattanooga…the supposition is that the fighting will be done in the east and that Richmond will be the next point. I think by six weeks more you will hear of a forward move in the east…I would like the furlough well enough but leaving is what I do not like. I never knew what it was to leave home and Friends before…" Very good condition.
