A Union soldier's war-date battle letter written by Private Frank Ashley, Co. H, 64th Ohio Volunteers, 3 ½ pp., 8vo, "Camp near Atlanta Ga, July 64," reading, in part: "…we have not taken Atlanta yet but are near it and feel confident of success…they (rebels) admit of loosing 22000 men…they have made some 3 or 4 different attacks on our men and have been repulsed every time with heavy loss a few more such would destroy their army there has been buried over 2500 rebs by our men in the 2 fights those are what have fell into our hands…my business is forage Master for the Regt…the assistant Commissary was killed…I had the Colonel's and Majors horses to take care of but on account of their drakes leaving they couldn't stand the fire…Gen Howard takes McPherson's command Gen. Stanly commands the 4 corps…" Fine condition. .
