A Union soldier's war-date letter written by Private Frank Ashley, Co. H, 64th Ohio Volunteers, 4pp., 8vo, "Decatur Ala, Jan 14 65," reading, in part: "…I am in Alabama on the south side of the tennessee river 4 regiments are here the other 2 are guarding the railroad the 64 at Athens the 65 from here to Huntsville…it is reported that Hood has left Corinth for an other place farther south…our cavalry has orders to destroy the railroad in the rear of Hood's Army and capture the prisnors back if possible they struck the road about 5 miles from Corinth have destroyed 16 tressle bridges besides other ones captured 300 wagons and one or 2 trains of cars…we are in the most deserted hole I ever saw the houses are most all burned…" Very good condition.
