A Union soldier's war-date letter written by Private Frank Ashley, Co. H, 64th Ohio Volunteers, 4pp., 4to, "Decatur Ala, February 3 65," reading, in part: "…we dare not go to the front without a heavy guard…there is some talk of the 64 and 65 being transferd to the reserve corps commanded by Gen Granger…he has sent an application to Gen Thomas…if there is no preventing providence we will succeed in driving the scurg from our land if brimstone does its duty which I think it will for if the Devil can burn sinners I think we can burn the itch…" Very good condition
