War-date Union officer's letter written by 2nd Lt. F. Frank Godfrey, 1st Maine Light Artillery, 4pp., 4to, "New Orleans, June 15, 1862," reading, in part: "…It is very expensive living here, our officers all like to live well, and have hired a house near the place, where we are encamped…I feel ashamed of the dowdy green, Yankee appearance of a great many of our officers…I have got to have a new frock coat with embroidered 2nd Lieuts shoulder straps, a pair of nice light blue broad cloth regulation pants with a red welt without a cord in it…My clothes are getting well worn…The city is very quiet and there are a great many union people here…I wish we had gone on to the Potomac. I might have had a chance to do a little fighting…" Fine condition.
