War-date Union officer's letter written by Captain F. Frank Godfrey, 1st Louisiana Cavalry (US), 3pp, 4to, "New Orleans, August 3, 1862," reading, in part: "…I have received an order from Genl. Butler detaching me from the Battery, and giving me permission to raise a company of Cavalry in the city. They are raising a Louisiana Brigade to which are to be attached three companies of Cavalry. I applied for a Captaincy of one of them…It is a pretty good jump from 2nd Lieut. to Captain, and I am feeling quite happy…I have two Lieuts. Who are helping recruit. The recruits are mostly foreigners or men of Northern birth, and they will fight as well for one side as another…I have been to see a Spaniard…he came up…with a young Spaniard…whom he wants to go with me…I would make him a Sergeant, he knows a number he thinks he can get, several of whom are Spaniards and Mexicans. I have associated a great deal with Spaniards…and I am beginning to talk the language…my Bangor recruits are all well. Jeffers has had the jaundice, I am going to try and have him transferred to go with me…". Fine condition
