War-date Union officer's letter written by Captain F. Frank Godfrey, 1st Louisiana Cavalry (US), 2pp, 8vo, "Near Thibodeaux, Louisiana, Nov. 1st, 1862," reading, in part: "Yesterday morning the 75th New York and my company of Cavalry for an advance guard, started on an expedition to the Grand Bayou to attack a body of the enemy who were said to have three siege guns in position there…thru' the information of a negro, I found eleven bales of cotton which we took with us…One of my Lieutenants with a Corporal and several men rode up to the house and found that every human being had left it. It had been plundered either by negroes or some of our soldiers, whom I am sorry to say, have not proved themselves on this expedition as honorable as they were brave at our recent engagement…" Unsigned. Old paper clip stain, else fine condition.
