A good war-date Union sailor's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written on patriotic stationery by Hiram Ash [formerly of the 14th Indiana Vols.], "U. S. Tyler, Feb. 15, 1865", in part: "…we don't get to see as much has they do in the army…there was a party of 10 men of our crew had a rite smart march of 30 miles last Sunday night…I was one of the crowd…3 of our men deserted…so the captain sent us with a commissioned officer to catch them. We left the river at sundown and we had the worst road to go…we stopped at every house that we came to. We captured a Rebel Brigade Surgeon at the first house…we caught the deserters about 4 o'clock in the morning at a house about 30 miles from where we started. I expect they will be shot or sent to the penetenury for life…George Wyeth is well…there isn't a better man on the boat…and the officers all think a heep of him…".
