Issue of the DAILY NATIONAL INTELLIGENCER, 4p. double folio, September 6, 1831, with 2nd page article on the “Southampton Affair” which states in small part: “The universal opinion...is, that Nat, a slave, a preacher and a pretended prophet, was the first contriver, the acutal leader, and the most remorseless of the executioners...Nat commenced the scene of murder at the first house, (Travis’s) with his own hand...The numbers engaged in the insurrection are variously reported. They probably did not exceed 40 or 50, and were fluctuating from desertions and new recruits. About 50 are in Southampton jail, some of them upon suspicion only. We trust and beieve that the intelligent magistracy of that coutnry will have the firmness to oppose the popular passion, should it be disposed to involve the innocent with the guilty, and to take suspicion for proof. The presence of the troops from Norfolk and Richmond alone prevented retaliation from being carried much farther...” More. VG. On August 21, 1831, Nat Turner led a slave revolt in Southampton, Virginia. In the next thirty-six hours, they axed or beat to death fifty-nine white men, women and children in Southampton County.
