A war-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Edwin R. Wyeth, Co. F, 14th Indiana Vols., Fredericksburg, Va., May 27, 1862, in part: "…we have been marching for the last 10 days. We have marched from New Market to this place distance of 140 miles…we passed through several towns and villages. Some of the women would cry when they saw us . In one place the girls made sport of our flag and some of them spat at us. They tried to aggravate us all they could but we only laughed at them and passed on and left them to themselves. There is some of the prettiest girls in Virginia I ever saw but they are just as mien as they are pretty…yesterday our division was reviewed by Abraham Lincoln President of the United States and the Hon. Edwin M. Stanton Secretary of War and the Bloody Englishman Lord Russell…Old Abe looks very common to be president of the United States…". The original"due 3" transmittal cover is included. VG
