HOOVER, John Edgar (1895-1972) was the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States. He founded the present form of the agency, and remained director for 48 years until his death. During his life, Hoover was highly regarded by much of the U.S. public. Since his death various allegations have tarnished this image. Hoover's leadership spanned eight presidential administrations, encompassed Prohibition, the Great Depression, World War II, the Korean War, the Cold War, and the Vietnam War. During this time the United States moved from a rural nation with strong isolationist tendencies to an urbanized superpower. Typed Letter Signed, "J.E. Hoover" 1p. quarto, on Federal Bureau of Investigation letterhead, June 25, 1937, addressed to H.P. Fulmer, Congressional Representative of South Carolina, and reads in part: "...I have your letter...in behalf of Mr. Fred G. Auld, Jr. and his brother, Mr. Thomas H. Auld, of Columbia, South Carolina, who are desirous of securing positions in the Federal Bureau of Investigation. I am indeed pleased to know of your interest in these young men and, in accordance with your request, I am forwarding to them formal application blanks for their use in applying for appointment in this Bureau..."
