Copper token, 7/8" diameter, ca.19th century. One of most famous anti-slavery icons comes from large copper tokens of the 1830's and shows a chained slave kneeling beneath the legend, "Am I Not A Man and a Brother?". This smaller token employs the same device on the obverse and is additionally signed "James" by its creator. The reverse depicts Adam and Eve amid the legend, "Man Over Man He Made Not Lord". This is most likely the product of a private English mint. Smooth surfaces, even wear and a light brown patina. Fine condition.
