Manuscript Document, selling Ferrily, Savinia and a minor child; 1 page, 8" x 6", January 9, 1848. Very Fine; left margin toned and uneven, slightly separated at one fold. Thomas James Chapman here sells R.S. Brashear Ferrily for $400, Savinia for $750, and the child for $830. VG. When Texas joined the United States in 1845, the state was home to some 30,000 bondsmen. After statehood, slavery grew spectacularly; within five years, the slave population had doubled. Prices inflated rapidly as the institution expanded in Texas. The average price of a bondsman, regardless of age, sex, or condition, rose from approximately $400 in 1850 to nearly $800 by 1860.
