Cast brass hatchet, 12" long, ca. 1889. The business end of this piece is dominated by a cutout profile of George Washington while an inscription running the length of the handle reads "Washington Inaugurated President of the US April 30 1789". Given the item's mellow old patina and the style of the type, this was probably made for the centennial of Washington's first inauguration. VF.
