January 7, 1849, Court Document "Dividing Slaves," Very Fine. 12.25" x 7.25," edge toning and some wear and chipping near the outer edges at the folds. This piece documents the division of the slaves from an estate into four lots, based on value. The "best" slaves (Lee, 25 years old) was valued at $700. Infants and toddlers were valued at $125-250 and 58 year old Jane was only "worth" $57. The recipients of some lots had to make cash payments to other lot owners in order to balance them out equally. An interesting look at the bookkeeping required to make sure that all of the slave owners got their "fair" share.
