Autograph Letter Signed "Alex. Horton," 4pp., quarto, San Francisco, California, April 15, 1853, to Thomas P. Morton, Skaneateles, New York, reading, in part: "…how egregiously people who are deceived who come here with the expectation of making their fortunes in a few months. Those who came here in 1849 had every opportunity for making money. A very few of them succeeded in amassing large fortunes & as a general thing they have lost them all…A few as every where else continue to make money rapidly & there are men here whose monthly incomes range from $8000 to $20,000. These however are exception & by far the greater majority of people who come here would gladly return home if they had the means of doing so…men can now be hired in the hearts of the mining districts for $50 a month & their board & many are glad to work for their board alone…". A rare peek into the shattered dreams of many an Eastern prospector. Browning, splits along the folds. Very good condition.
