A complete issue of Frank Leslie’s Illustrated, July 12, 1873, 16pp., disbound, VG. An important front cover, “The Modoc Indians - From Photographers C.F. Watkins” shows eleven of the warriors including Captain Jack in the center. Each of the other 10 are identified, Boston Charley, Murderer, Shack Nasty Jim, ect. Notice also, Donald M’Kay, the Half Breed scout who trailed the Modocs. - Same scout on the fron cover of the following lot. The Modoc War, or Modoc Campaign (also known as the Lava Beds War), was an armed conflict between the Native American Modoc tribe and the United States Army in southern Oregon and northern California from 1872 to 1873.[1] The Modoc War was the last of the Indian Wars to occur in California or Oregon.
