An authentic issue of the Gentleman’s Magazine, London, September 1787, 96pp., disbound. From the interior, a full page copper engraving of author John Milton. The image is described on the following page, “... a picture in his possession. It is on wood. At the top is Ano 1623 ...” This is an important portrait of Milton with only one other predating this one. The one that predates this was 1618 by Cornelius Jannsen. The artist of this one is unknown. John Milton (1608-1674) was an English poet, polemicist, a scholarly man of letters, and a civil servant for the Commonwealth of England under Oliver Cromwell. He wrote at a time of religious flux and political upheaval, and is best known for his epic poem Paradise Lost
