Undated, Question for the Texas Supreme Court: Can Husband Use His Wife's Slaves - Without Her Signed Consent - To Secure His Debt? Manuscript Document, being an appeal to the Texas high court alleging error; 3pp., 7 1/2" by 12 1/2", no place, no date. Fastened at top by a pink ribbon. In Choice Extremely Fine condition. Women having less rights at law than men, and slaves having no rights at all, the Texas Supreme Court is asked to rule in this case involving both. This plea alleges an error was committed in a case where a Judgment was rendered against Mr. Morrison to recover the amount of a promissory note, which Morrison partially secured by using " a lot of negroes" owned by his wife. Inasmuch as Morrison's wife was not named in the suit and the slaves used as collateral were exclusively her property, and offered as collateral without her signed consent, it is then legal for the plaintiff to take the exclusive property of a wife to secure the debt of her husband? The answer to the case is not known.
