Manuscript Document, being instructions to the jury, Bradley vs. Little: 2 pages, 8" x 12," Fort Bend County, Texas, c. 1850s. Three file holes at top, not affecting text; in Extremely Fine condition. At issue is the claim of overseer Bradley that, having been dismissed from his job for no reason, he is entitled to one third of the crop he would have brought in had he been permitted to work, and that he should be compensated for the services of "his negro girl," likewise engaged in work on LittleÍs land. Little argues that Bradley did not do what he was supposed to do and furthermore, calls into question whether he furnished "a negro woman" at all. This document reminds that slavery, top to bottom - on huge plantations or one-horse farms - was an essential element of Texas' economic system.
