November 13, 1851, Notice of Court Suit Re: "Slave Emily and Her Child." Manuscript Document, being notice to defendant of a suit brought to recover slaves; 1 page, 6 1/2" x 11 1/2," Brazoria County, Texas, c. November 13, 1851. Two pieces of paper were pasted together to make this single sheet. There is slight almost indiscernible cut at one fold; in Very Fine condition overall. Here James Walker, guardian for Adam S. Blond, serves notice on Frederick Calvit that he, Walker, is suing Calvit "to recover a slave Emily & her child...as the property of said Adam S. Blond." Young Blond had been willed "one negro girl named Emily" in 1837, at which time she was childless; this document, picking up the trail 14 years later, finds that Emily is a now a mother - and ultimately worth some 25% more than when bequeathed. This suit would eventually result in Calvit's being ordered to produce the woman and child, or pay Blond $1780.
