STOWE, Harriet Beecher (1811-1896). Abolitionist author of Uncle Tom's Cabin, a scathing novel of Negro slavery that deepened America's sectional conflict of the 1850's. Signed Book, UNCLE TOM'S CABIN, 391 pages, octavo, 1852, John Cassell, London, England. This first British edition of the book is inscribed by Stowe as follows: "It is a comfort to hope, as so many of the world's sorrows and wrongs pass from age to age been lived down; so a time shall come when sketches similar to these shall be valuable only as memorials of what has log since ceased to be. Harriet Beecher Stowe Hartford Dec. 6th 1893 Written for DeWitt Miller." Miller was an avid book collector and devout Christian from New York State. The front cover and most of the spine's wrap of this book have separated from the binding. The pages are aged, yet still firmly bound. Overall Good condition.
