Manuscript Document Signed, 1p. quarto, April 4, 1853, 1p. quarto, and reads in part: “...Know all men by these presents that we Henry Leed & W.D. Collins are held and firmly bound unto the Commonwealth of Kentucky in the penalty of five hundred dollars current money...The condition of the above obligation is such taht whereas a slave named Jackson has this day been emancipated by the will of Judith Ewing decd and a certificate of freedom has been applied for & granted. Now if the above named obligors shall present the said slave from becoming chargeable to any county in said Commonwelath, then the above obligation to be void or else remain in full force & virtue...” Fine. Though court records for 1853 could not be ascertained as for the number of emancipations in Kentucky, the number in 1859 was only 176 out of a total slave population of nearly a quarter million. These documents are hence very scarce.
