A good war-date Union POW's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written on McClellan patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Horatio Richards [POW Fredericksburg, Dec. 13, 1862], Co. B, 38th New York Vols [also served in the 4th Maine Vols after June 1863], "Camp Parole, Annapolis, Md. Jan. 25, 1863", in part: "…I have not forgotten you…the reason why I did not write is because I was in a place that I could not…I have been a pioneer of war. I was taken to Richmond and kept there 4 weeks. I am now…at Camp Parole…our camp is about 2 miles from the city…I had a Merry Christmas and happy New Year in Libby Prison, Richmond. Our Christmas dinner was bread and water and our New Year's dinner was water and bread. Our bed was the soft side of a board with nothing to cover us but the clothes that we had on…if [I] hadn't been one of the tough kind I would've been dead long ago…the 4th Maine was cut up pretty bad and what there is left is a battery…".
