An June 4, 1860 "THE BARBARISM OF SLAVERY" and the admission of Kansas as a Free State, speech given in the United States Senate by well known anti-slave Senator Charles Sumner. The speech was given at the time the United States was breaking apart due to the slavery issue which led to a large degree to the Civil War. The front cover of the 32 page speech states "THE BARBARISM OF SLAVERY SPEECH OF HON. CHARLES SUMNER, ON THE BILL FOR THE ADMISSION OF KANSAS AS A FREE STATE IN THE UNITED STATES SENATE, JUNE 4, 1860, WASHINGTON D.C. MR. MADISON THOUGHT IT WRONG TO ADMIT IN THE CONSTITUTION THE IDEA OF PROPERTY INMEN (DEBATE IN THE FEDERAL CONVENTION, 25TH AUGUST, 1787). PUBLISHED BY THADDEUS HYATT 1860". In 1856 Senator Sumner was attacked severely on the floor of the United States Senate by a pro-slavery US Senator and Senator Sumner missed an extended time in the Senate due to the injuries suffered in the attack. Apparently that attack did not sway Senator Sumner's 'Fire and Brimstone' style of attack on slavery as this speech was giver after he returned to the Senate. The back of the speech lists several speeches and documents that can be acquired that concern the upcoming "PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN OF 1860" when Abraham Lincoln was elected President. The speech is 5 ½ x 8 ¾ inches in size and appears to have been bound at one time. The paper covers have wear to the corners with slight paper loss to the back cover corners but the contents of the speech are in nice condition.
