Booklet, SPEECHES OF HON. JOSEPH HOLT, 20 pages, octavo, 1861, H. Folkinhorn, Washington, D.C. Attorney Joseph Holt (1807-1894) was a Kentucky Democrat, defender of slavery, and, oddly for his class, a staunch Unionist. Serving as Postmaster General under James Buchanan, Holt was appointed Judge Advocate General of the Army by Abraham Lincoln. Transcribed here are speeches Holt delivered to enthusiastic audiences in Boston and New York as he was traveling about drumming up support for the war effort. Holt's nationalistic philosophy came though clearly when he said "...the thought of dismembering this Union, which has been the source of all our strength and of all our joys as a nation, can be entertained by no true man. Dismemberment would involve the debasement of all of which we, as Americans, have so long and so justly been proud, and the complete ruin of that grand inheritance which we have received from our fathers, and which is our duty to transmit undiminished in its blessings to our descendants...". Paper wraps with light aging throughout. Fine condition.
