Group of three Black American items, includes: Albumen photograph 3"x4", of an ex-slave named Hugdah Jackson, taken in 1897. ID'd on verso of photo and with cover that reads "Hull's picture Slave of Dr. S. Bosworth." Tape repairs, else Good….plus; Autograph Letter Signed, 2p. octavo, that begins in full stride "A White man dependent on a wooley headed negro for political privileges & social blessings! How can a Caucasian contemplate such a thing without feeling of just indignations & scorn, for those who are thus at tempting the degradation of his noble Reac. But enough of this unpleasant topic…" soiling, Good…plus; Autograph Letter Signed, 3p. quarto, Albion, February 1, 1863, with good slavery content, it reads in part: "…Rhurma has a family of eight children…Two of the boys are musicians in the army, one is fife maj. and the other belongs to the band, the third was wounded at the battle of Richmond, Ky & is discharged…Brother David is in the army…I long for the time when this infernal rebellion shall be crushed out, and it would have been done long ago if the north had not been so afraid of hurting slavery, they wished to cure the disease without removing the cause…we are all affected by it…and is it any wonder when we take into consideration the fact that four Millions of our fellow beings, in this land of boasted freedom, are held in the most object and hopeless slavery. The doctrine of the cursed be Canaan Clergy, and pro Slavery politicians, that the Almighty made one part of humanity for the exclusive purpose of serving the other is annihilated in the fact that the races will mix and that there is this day as much Anglo Saxon blood in slavery in the South, as African, practical imalgination has so long been in vogue there that in some instances we can scarcely distinguish between the master & slave, and while this is a fact that a God of justice and equity rules among the nations of the Earth, is it not a wonder rather that vengeance has so long slumbered and if this struggle is not yet half over if we are yet to pass through rivers of blood if as a result that from Florida to Oregon and from Texas to Maine, one hallelujah of freedom may go up that result would not be too dearly obtained…" VG. An excellent letter. (3 items)
