1863, by the Loyal Publication Society, NY, Choice Fine. 9" x 5.75", 20 pages, Loyal Publication Society Pamphlet No. 18, printed by Wm. C. Bryant & Co. Signature of "Miss Grimke" along top margin of cover--possibly one of the abolitionist Grimke sisters owned this pamphlet! Toned and soiled covers, but complete and crisp printing overall. A valuable historical document, recounting the support of early presidents and American Revolutionary leaders who supported the emancipation of those loyal African Americans who would fight on behalf of the fledgling United States. An important pamphlet produced during a time in which Northerners had great ambivalence about arming Blacks to fight in the Civil War. The Loyal Publication Society was a high-powered organization founded in New York City in early 1863 to distribute widely pamphlets "of unquestionable and unconditional loyalty" to the Union cause, in order to influence public opinion for the Union and the Republican Party. The "tracts" were placed in public places, distributed free at military hospitals and to the armed forces. Francis Lieber was the president of the organization and various authors sympathetic to the association provided texts. An interesting slice of public opinion peddling from the Civil War era.
