Autograph Letter Signed, John A. Hicks, 4p. octavo, Savannah, Georgia, April 6, 1868, addressed to James Hicks, and reads in part: “...I reckon (that is the Southern term) all crackers use it, that you will be glad, very much pleased, yes delighted to receive by mail, postage paid, a letter from your father...I am in Savannah, where I never expect, but am right glad to be...They do not like to have negroes to rule over them & I should not be very well satisfied to be under a goverment administration by the odorifous polished children of Ham. There was a large negro convention held in one of the parks yesterday. I rode around the park hoping to hear something of the argument of the ebony speaker. But he spoke so loud that I could not hear his words. He was the same black skin who was arrested in Boston & was in fact the cause of the War. The platform was crowded with wooly hats & in the midst sat Hopkins a white & a candiate for the office of Mayor. One hundred police in Confederate grey were on hand to keep the peace. And the peace was kept. I rode out a bout 4 miles into the country with Mr. Gowdy & on our return we met droves of these colored freemen, returning in the best possible humor. Many had guns without powder or shot. They have been so long forbidden to carry fire arms that they think it now the mark of a gentleman to lug about an old musket or carbine...if they fried they would be sure to shoot themselves...” More.
