Two issues of PUCK, each 14 pages, quarto, 1884 and 1885, New York City. "Puck" was a forum of political satire that relied heavily on the cartoonist's wit and talent. Each of these issues contain color images of Negro stereotypes. The September 10, 1884 front cover shows former Union general-turned politician Benjamin Butler with a servant. The January 7, 1885 back cover features a parade of would-be pensioners marching on the capitol. Among these are a group of ancient Negroes in 18th-century garb under a banner reading "Washington's Body-Servants and Nurses in Line!!". Fine condition.
