The article is a travel log providing a brief history of North Carolina. Most interesting are the illustration of several black characters. Betsy Sweat “ .. smaked a short-stemmed pipe almost incessantly, and would drink numerous jiggers of raw whiskey without winking. ..” And, Aunt Rose, perhaps a hundred years old. ... and others. ... plus, Bound Volume of Harpers New Monthly Magazine, January 1856, 144pp., disbound, VG. A lengthy 21 page article “Virginia Illustrated” with 23 illustrations including 6 illustrations of Blacks. Most interesting are the characters of Uncle Peter, The Cook, and A Conservative Philosopher. ... plus, Bound Volume of Harpers New Monthly Magazine, July 1856, 144pp., disbound, VG. A lengthy 21 page article “Negroland and the Negroes” with 16 illustrations. The article reviews the decline in the slave trade along the Western African coast. Several striking illustrations such as African Belle, Toko-Gabun Chief, Electing a King ... and others.
