1894, Currier & Ives Print: "THE DARKTOWN FIRE BRIGADE - TO THE RESCUE!" NY, Very Fine. 12.75" x 15" color lithograph, framed to 15.5" x 18". Dampstaining along margins, affecting portions of the print. A tear along top margin, and a missing upper right corner. Another in a series of stereotypically derogatory images of African Americans from the end of the 19th century, illustrated by Thomas Worth for Currier & Ives. This comically racist depiction of a dark-skinned squad of firemen hauling a pump wagon up a hill was utilized as an advertisement for "Rumsey & Co."--a manufacturer of "pumps, and fire engines, hook and ladder trucks" in Seneca Falls, NY. Rare!
