A complete issue of The Illustrated London News, April 6, 1861, 24 pp., disbound, VG. From the interior, a report “Slaves for Sale,” provides a description of the accompanying 1/2 page engraving. In small part, “The accompanying engraving represents a gang of negroes exhibited in the city of New Orleans, previous to an auction, from a sketch made on the spot by our artist. The men and women are well clothed, in their Sunday best - the men in blue cloth ... with beaver hats; and the women in calico dresses ...subject to the inspection of the purchasing or non-purchasing passing crowd ...” The engraving shows the slaves lined up in front of the auctioneers sign, “T. Hart Slaves.” In addition, another report, “The Dandy Slave,” with a 1/4 page engraving. The article and the engraving illustrates the well dressed Baltimore slave.
