Lot of 4 partially printed telegrams, each one page, octavo, June 29 - July 3, 1863, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Sent via the Atlantic and Ohio Telegraph Lines, these urgent messages from A.L. Russell, Pennsylvania's Adjutant General are to a Captain Frank Wheeler in Philadelphia, the State's Mustering Officer in that city. This flurry of telegraphic activity was due to the Confederate threat to Pennsylvania that culminated in the Battle of Gettysburg. They telegrams read in part: "(6/29/63)...You are hereby appointed a state mustering officer for the city of Phil. Capt. Love will supply you with muster rolls which can be altered to suit...(6/30/63)...you can appoint any captain of a mustered company you consider fit...(6/30/63)...The call for ninety (90) days service does not include Colored troops as they cannot be recd as penna militia...(7/3/63)...I must ask you to wait a short time for your commission. All the blanks with state headings were some days since sent away...". Light aging and folds, else VF condition.
