A great Northern woman's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by a certain E. G. Travis, Riker's Island, New York, Jan. 8, [63], to her sister, in part: "…Dwight has been to the city today…I have heard that Jim reenlisted…Dwight is the same fellow that he was before he became a soldier. I have not been out around camp much…I got in the city about ten o'clock on Sunday…after riding in the cars all nigh…after I crossed the Ferry Charley met me at the Depot…the drum is beating now for roll call. It seems about the same here as it did at Camp Holly. Ladies come on the Island every day and there is quite a good many that stay here all the time. I went down to Head Quarters today when the boat came in. There was about one hundred Negroes come. They have got a Negro Regiment. They look very good when they are all together. The new volunteers have come in very fast since I have been here…300 came on the Island at once one night…".
