Two documents regarding a Black sailor, “Joseph Crawford” who gets paid $300 as a draft substitute. The first document, “New York County Substitute Committee,” 8-1/2” x 7,” March 24, 1864 states in part, “Joseph Crawford (col), by occupation a Seaman, resident at 120 Roosevelt St, having agreed to volunteer as a substitute .....” plus, A second document, March 24, 1864, 9” x 12,” on goldenrod paper, states in part, “I, Joseph Crawford, for and in consideration of the sum of $300 to me in hand paid by Edward Duffy ..... It is signed with an X “his mark” and in another’s hand, Joseph Crawford. Nice and unusual pair.
